چکیده
By G. F. SMITH, HELGA KOLB AND JANET A. FAur’ cii DURING AN ELECTRON-MICROSCOPIC INVESTIGATION of cultured human lymphocytes, an intercellular or spindle-bridge and mid-body were observed (Figs. 1 and 2). These unusual structures occur in late telophase of cell division. While they have been demonstrated by electronmicroscopy in mammalian secondary spermatocytes,’ cnidoblasts of Hydra,2.3 rat erythroblasts4 and HeLa cells,5 their occurrence in cultured human lymphocyte cells has not been previously noted. This report describes a useful way of obtaining large numbers of cultured lymphocytes in various stages of growth for electron-microscopy. In addition, observations on the structure and composition of the spindle bridge and midbody in cultured human lymphocytes are presented.

The Fine Structure of the Mid-body of the Rat Erythroblast
The development of the mid-body has been studied in mitotic erythroblasts of the rat bone marrow by means of thin sections examined with the electron microscope. A differentiated region on the continuous spindle fibers, consisting of a localized increase in density, is observed at the equatorial plane. The mid-body seems to develop by the aggregation of such denser lengths of spindle fiber. Its...
متن کاملAn Electron Microscopic Study of the Development of the Cleavage Furrow in Mammalian Cells
The process of cytoplasmic cleavage has been studied in thin sections of rat erythroblasts and the cells of mouse leukemia and Walker 256 carcinoma of the rat. The development of the cleavage furrow begins in relation to the mid-body, which, earlier, appears on the equatorial plane in association with the continuous fibers of the spindle. The earliest evidence of a cleavage furrow is the presen...
متن کاملCell cycle control of spindle pole body duplication and splitting by Sfi1 and Cdc31 in fission yeast.
Spindle pole biogenesis and segregation are tightly coordinated to produce a bipolar mitotic spindle. In yeasts, the spindle pole body (SPB) half-bridge composed of Sfi1 and Cdc31 duplicates to promote the biogenesis of a second SPB. Sfi1 accumulates at the half-bridge in two phases in Schizosaccharomyces pombe, from anaphase to early septation and throughout G2 phase. We found that the functio...
متن کاملThe Influence of Meiotic Spindle Configuration by Cysteamine during in vitro Maturation of Mouse Oocytes
Background: The aim of this study was to assess effects of cysteamine as an anti-oxidant on rate of in vitro maturation of oocyte and determination of its effects on spindle size and shape. Methods: Pre-mature mice were primed with pregnant mare stimulating gonadotrophin (PMSG) and germinal vesicle (GV) stage oocytes were obtained 48 h after. The oocytes were cultured in tissue culture medium (...
متن کاملThe Cdc31p-binding protein Kar1p is a component of the half bridge of the yeast spindle pole body
KAR1 has been identified as an essential gene which is involved in karyogamy of mating yeast cells and in spindle pole body duplication of mitotic cells (Rose, M. D., and G. R. Fink. 1987. Cell. 48:1047-1060). We investigated the cell cycle-dependent localization of the Kar1 protein (Kar1p) and its interaction with other SPB components. Kar1p is associated with the spindle pole body during the ...
